Tips For Traveling When You’re Pregnant
Just because you’re expecting doesn’t mean you’re tied down to one place. The reality is that a lot of women need to travel while they’re pregnant. Sometimes, they need to do it for their jobs. Other times, it’s to visit friends and family before childbirth. When you need to make a long commute – whether by plane, bus, or train – you can relieve the discomfort by taking a few preparatory steps. Here are four smart tips for traveling when you’re pregnant:
Pack Food And Beverages
Being on the road (or in the air) can disrupt anybody’s eating routine. It’s important to remember that you need to eat healthy foods during your pregnancy. Bring plenty of low-maintenance snacks with you; almonds, crackers, and dried fruits are perfect. Also, if you’re planning to travel by plane, contact the airline and ask if they can prepare a fruit or vegetable platter for you. Remember to bring your bottle of water, especially for a long trip.
Plan For Frequent Potty Breaks
Each of us has walked into a public restroom and been tempted to immediately walk back out again. They’re often dirty or unsanitary. Unfortunately, when you’re pregnant, you’ll need to make frequent pit stops. If you happen upon a clean restroom while waiting at the airport or train station, by all means take advantage of it. But, come prepared just in case. Bring sanitary wipes, a hand cleanser, and even a mini-roll of toilet paper.
Another quick tip: make sure you sit next to the aisle on the plane, bus, or train. That will give you easier access to the restroom.
Take Care Of Your Feet
Being pregnant can be tough on your feet (legs, too). If your trip is a long one, take breaks once every hour to get up, walk around, and get your circulation flowing again. If you don’t, your feet will swell and your legs will start cramping up. If you’re driving, pull over at a rest stop each hour to stretch your legs. It may be inconvenient, but the alternative (swelling and cramps) will cause more trouble.
Travel Light
The fewer items you have with you while traveling, the easier it will be to maneuver your belongings. If possible, put everything you need into a single small roll-on suitcase and a small carry-on bag. Pack a book, snacks, and your iPod into your carry-on so you’ll have a relaxing trip.
Traveling while you’re pregnant can be a frustrating experience if you’re not prepared. Your body will likely already feel uncomfortable, so even small inconveniences can become problematic. Use the four tips above to reduce your stress, increase your comfort, and help ensure that your travels are smooth and relaxed.
