3 Tips For Buying The Right Baby Crib
What are the most important features in a baby crib? Durability, safety, and comfort top the list, but today, parents have more options than ever. From economical models that are designed for practicality to high-end alternatives imbued with stylish overtones, parents must consider sturdiness, safety, style, and their budget. Making the right choice isn’t easy. To help you select from the seemingly countless models available, here are three tips for the savvy shopper:
#1 – Shop For Convertibility
Many models convert into beds for toddlers. As your infant grows, you can avoid having to purchase another piece of baby furniture by investing in a crib that converts. Having said that, a convertibility option may not be appropriate if you and your partner plan to have another child in the near future. Also, it’s important to note that some models which convert to toddler beds require additional parts such as support or stabilizing rails.
#2 – Watch The Drop
Baby cribs come with a number of side options. Some are equipped with single or double-drop sides while others are furnished with stationary sides. There’s no question that drop sides are convenient. The problem is that they can pose safety risks. For example, your infant can become trapped within gaps or openings. Also, the construction of the material is often poor, leading to loose hardware. In fact, because of safety concerns, several manufacturers have issued recalls. Our advice: stay away from drop sides until the safety issues have been resolved.
#3 – Look At The Casters
You’ll probably want the flexibility to move your baby’s crib without pulling a muscle. For example, you’ll need to vacuum under or around it occasionally. You may also want to bring it into your bedroom so your infant can sleep near you once in awhile. If the crib is equipped with caster wheels, mobility isn’t an issue; you’ll be able to move it easily. However, a lot of models are not furnished with casters, or if they are, they’re designed poorly.
Before making a purchase decision, take the time to inspect the wheels. The best designs are multi-directional. They may cost a few extra dollars, but they’ll pay for themselves over and over in added convenience.
Shopping On A Budget
Price is a poor barometer of quality when used exclusively. Models that are reasonably priced are often constructed as well – and sometimes, even better – than more expensive alternatives. As noted above, the key factors when shopping for your baby’s crib are safety, strength, and comfort. A $200 model from Ikea may suit your needs (not to mention your budget) just as well as a $650 Legacy. And chances are, your baby won’t know the difference.
