The Freshman Parent’s Guide To Leaving Guilt Behind
Moms and dads who have been through the parenting experience can offer important insight to new parents: be flexible with yourself. The fact is, things never turn out exactly as you had originally planned. And when things happen that you once swore you would never allow, it’s too easy to feel the pangs of guilt. Raising a baby and offering guidance as she grows is one part planning and one part intuition. Leave yourself room to make a few mistakes along the way.
Below, we’ll take a quick tour through common parenting concerns that millions of mothers and fathers obsess over. You’ll discover that giving yourself a little flexibility doesn’t require being wracked with parental guilt.
Breast Milk Versus Formula
Society tends to place a great deal of importance on the act of breastfeeding. Understandably, many women feel that if they’re not breastfeeding their babies, they’re depriving them of something important. While breast milk is often considered to be a better source of nutrients than formula, it’s not always an appropriate option. For example, some women find breastfeeding painful. Others may not produce enough milk and are forced to supplement their own with formula. Still others may wish to return to work; taking a breast pump with them may not be an option.
Your happiness is just as important as that of your baby. Make the choice that is right for both of you.
Allowing A Pacifier
Before a new baby arrives, many parents make the decision that they won’t allow the use of a pacifier. This decision might be based on wanting to avoid potential problems with their infant’s teeth and even avoiding the eventual weaning process. To be sure, some children will need to be weaned from their pacifier. But, many of them will give it up on their own by the time their permanent teeth come in. The chances of doing harm to their teeth are practically zero.
Also, keep in mind that babies find pacifiers to be incredibly soothing. They can be a great comfort when something is causing them stress.
Cesarean Versus Natural Birth
Childbirth is always a little unpredictable. Whether you’d prefer to have an elective C-section or undergo a natural birthing process, it may be necessary to take an alternate path. Unfortunately, women can often feel guilty or less satisfied than otherwise if their childbirth plans go awry.
Realize that medical precautions always take precedence. Your doctor and the delivery team will happily follow your wishes unless there is a medical reason to deviate from them. In the end, a safe childbirth for both you and your baby is the goal with the highest priority.
As you care and raise your infant, don’t allow the pangs of guilt to give you pause. In many ways, being a new parent is an experiment. Enjoy the experience, use your intuition, and be flexible with yourself.
