Dos And Don’ts Of Delivery Room Protocol
When it comes to the delivery room, we’ve traveled a long way over the past forty years. Back then, no one had heard of birth plans. And the idea of the father-to-be standing beside the mom-to-be during childbirth was an oddity. Things have changed, of course. Expecting dads are often along for the entire ride. And while cameras were once shunned in the delivery room, video recorders have practically become the norm.
Even though the manner in which childbirth is handled has changed, it’s worth revisiting a few etiquette rules for the occasion. Below, we’ll provide a quick list of dos and dont’s for the delivery room. Doctors and nurses have their own preferences, but the following list is a good place to start.
Relatives Should Behave
Being in the room during childbirth may be awkward for your relatives. They might begin talking among themselves to divert their attention. Or, they might bring food into the room with them. Both represent bad manners. In their defense, sisters, cousins, and aunts didn’t start showing up for the event until a decade ago. That said, let them know that you would prefer they avoid ignoring you. Moreover, hamburgers and other delicious foods are banned if you’re forced to make do with ice chips.
Limit The Crowd
Giving birth is exciting and you definitely want the important people in your life to share the experience with you. However, there’s no reason to have the cable guy, local deli owner, and your daughter’s soccer coach in the room. That only creates unnecessary commotion. If the crowd is large enough, its size might even prevent the doctor and nurses from doing their jobs. Pick a few people to be there by your side. Ask everyone else to remain in the halls.
Limit The Number Of Children
It’s easy to understand how young kids might be excited by the prospect of joining you for childbirth. After all, having a baby is an intense and rewarding experience. But, keep in mind that youngsters usually have short attention spans. Given that childbirth can require several hours, they might start to become antsy. Also, the experience can be traumatic to some kids if they’re unprepared for the mess. If you plan to have a child in the delivery room, make sure an adult (besides your partner) is there to watch them.
Delivery room protocol has changed dramatically since your mother gave birth to you. Things that were once unacceptable are now considered normal. Having said that, there are still a few rules of good etiquette that apply. Make sure your relatives and friends who will be joining you understand that you’re the star of the show. Also, try to limit the crowd size and the number of young children present. Doing those three things will help ensure that your childbirth experience is more enjoyable.
